Not far from Athens, Andros constitutes a popular destination for your holidays or even for a weekend. It is famous for its naval tradition, rich nature and abundant waters, characteristics that make it distinctive and different from the other islands of the complex of Cyclades.

According to Greek mythology, Andros was Apollo’s grandson and a general to the Cretan king Ramanthos.

Getting There

By boat

The port of Rafina in eastern Attica is connected with the port of Gavrio in Andros . The island is also connected with the island of Tinos and Myconos.

Beaches

In Andros there are dozens of beaches dispersed all over the island. Some of them are cosmopolitan and well-organized, while some others are isolated offering privacy and tranquility.


Batsi Beach

It is the most popular and crowded beach on the island. Its soft sand, the gentle breeze and the shallow water, render it ideal for families with children. There, the visitor can find exceptional amenities.


Near Chora

In the area of Chora the visitor can find an organized beach at Niborio and the marvelous isolated beach at Achla, where you can go by a small boat as well. You may also try the beaches at Paraporti, Gialia and Piso Gialia.

Fellos Beach

It is located north from Gavrio , a sandy beach with clear water that you will find shade only under the trees. Fellos beach is easily accessible and some taverns there ,will satisfy your desire to eat something.


Agios Petros

An amazing beach with clear warm water and soft sand, will captivate the heart of the holidaymaker with its beauty. Also there are some taverns in this area, the only thing you can do is to savour the tasty plates.
Apart from the aforementioned beaches there are even more, sandy or rocky, isolated or crowded. Discover them, escaping  from the daily routine of town and enjoy the swimming as well as the sunbathing.

Museum of Modern Art

The Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation inaugurated the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chora, the  capital of Andros and birthplace of Basil P. Goulandris. The main objective of the museum is to continue to promote Greek and international modern and contemporary art.
The museum  has hosted  a great number of international art exhibitions and  the works of legendary artists.

Archaeological Museum

The collection contains findings from the excavations in the ancient Zagora, presenting the rich history of the island.

Archaeological Museum of Paleopolis

Its collection contains sculptures, statues, coins and signs found in the excavations in Paleopolis.


Agios Petros Tower

Agios (Saint) Petros Tower, is one of the best preserved in Cyclades islands. It has cylindrical shape and its height is 20m. It is made of local schist. In the interior there is a helical stair, which in the past was leading to at least five floors.


Zoodochos Pigi Monastery

It is the largest monastery in Andros. In 1928 it was transformed into a women monastery . Initially it functioned as a School and transformed into a monastery in 842 by empress Theodora. It is also reported that many upper-class people were educated at the school. Additionally there is a rich library with books and manuscripts, a museum with holy vestments and other things and a small collection of prehistoric tools.

Local products

In Gavrio and in Chora there are pastry shops where you can buy the famous almond delicacy “skaltsounia”, the best in Greece. You might also want to purchase some local sausage, salted pork and raki, a strong alcoholic drink.

Festival

Ploes

Ploes, is an annual music and arts festival organized by the Kydonios Foundation.

Gavriotika Festival

It is a cultural festival that is held every year during the first fortnight of August, which is a celebration involving games and exhibitions.
