with a relaxing atmosphere, Folegandros is an ideal island for families and romantic couples. It is situated close to popular islands such
as Santorini, but it keeps its traditional character. It is one of the most
amazing islands of Cyclades.
Getting
there
The island
of Folegandros can be reached by a conventional ship from Piraeus or by High-Speed catamaran.
Accommodation
Despite the
fact that Folegandros isn’t included in popular and busy destinations, it offers many choices for hotel
accommodation varying from simple rooms to more spacious apartments. The
majority of accommodation, is concentrated in the main port of the island Karavostasi.
Apart from the port, the visitor can find a few hotels in Chora which is the
capital of the island.
Beaches
What
prevails in the beaches of the island is the tranquility and the natural
beauty. The island has a number of quiet beaches, where the holidaymaker can
enjoy endless sunbathing and swimming. Some of them are:
*Agali the
most popular beach of the island, is sandy with clear waters. For those who
want to spend a few days in the area,
there are a few taverns as well as some rooms to let.
*Karavostasi is located near the port. This is the perfect starting point for an
exploration of the other beaches that are around the port area of Karavostasi. These are Hohlídia, Vitzétzo, Latináki,
Pountáki and Livádi.
*Hohlidia
this sandy beach with its swallow waters constitutes an ideal choice for families
with small children.
*
Latinaki-Vincenzo-Pountaki, these three successive beaches, are ideal for those who want privacy and tranquility.
Sightseeing
*The Church
of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary
This church
is dedicated to the Assumption of Virgin Mary and was possible constructed on
the ruins of an ancient temple. The only path to reach there is a stone path.
According
to the myth on May 1st of 1790 18 boats of Algerian pirates reached the island
of Folegandros. The residents of the island were so frightened that begged Virgin Mary for their lives and their protection.
Then all of a sudden a strong wind blew and sank the ships without leaving any
survivors. Therefor, Virgin Mary is
considered the saint protector of the island.
* Chrysospilia
It is
considered a stunning site not only for the archaeologists and speleologists.
Chrysospilia (golden cave) is situated below the monastery of the Virgin Mary. According
to some archeological findings, it was a place of worship.
Local
products
*A
mouth-watering recipe is matsata, a handmade
pasta served with cockerel or rabbit.
* “Karpouzenia”
is a traditional sweet. The ingredients of it are watermelon, honey and sesame.
* White and
red local wine.
* Pasteli
which made with sesame and honey.
