Kythnos  is known as Thermia because of its thermal springs. It is a picturesque island in the Aegean Sea and constitutes  an ideal destination for a weekend as it is very close to Athens from the port of Piraeus or from the port of Lavrio.

Accommodation

There are several villages on Kythnos where the visitor can find satisfactory accommodation facilities.

 Merihas is the Port of Kythnos Island and has at its disposal several studios and apartments. As it is a modern tourist village, constitutes pole of attraction for young people.

Also, the visitor can find seaside resorts in some beaches















Beaches

Kythnos is an island full of bays and unique beaches with crystal clear waters.

Loutra Beach

This beach attracts many visitors because of its thermal springs which have  therapeutic  power. 

Loutra is the most known village of Kythnos since many visitors come here for the thermal  springs and the holidaymakers can find plenty of rooms to let or apartments.

Kolona beach

This impressive beach connects the island of Agios Loukas with the rest of Kythnos.  A stripe of sand splits the beach in two separated beaches. The bathers can enjoy the shade of tamarisk trees as there aren’t any umbrellas or sunbeds there.

Episkopi beach

A lovely, well-protected from the wind bay with a lot of trees, is situated close to Mericha. It is one of the most crowded beaches of the island that offers relaxation.

Kanala Beach

This beach is located close to Panagia Kanala village.  A large sandy beach with nice transparent green-blue color. It is famous because of the church of Panagia Kanala, who is the protector of the island.

Of course, there are more beaches than aforementioned, ideal for families or for total privacy.

Sightseeing

Folklore Museum

The Folklore Museum is housed in Driopida. The visitor can see traditional clothes of the locals as well as objects of daily use.

Byzantine Museum

The small Byzantine Museum is housed in the church of Ag. George in Driopida village. It exhibits icons from Byzantine era and rare books from Mount Athos.

Church of Panagia Kanala



The present Church of Panagia Kanala was built in 1869 in place of the original Church. According to the legend the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary was found in the sea by local fishermen while they were fishing. The icon emerged from the sea in the strait between Kythnos and Serifos Island. For that reason called «Kanala».

Religious feast

The festival of Panagia Kanala, takes place every August 15th and September 8th with songs, music and traditional dances in the rhythms of the violin and the lute.

Local products

The cheese of Kythnos is very popular. It is extremely soft with unique sour taste. Another delicious product of the island is the thyme honey.
