😺 The wild cat of Crete (Felis silvestris) 😺

The European Wildcat (Felis sylvestris) has a wide distribution in continental Greece and in most mountain regions of Crete. Until today no data on the distribution of the species have been confirmed.

 Older unconfirmed sources report the species in Peloponnese, Euboea. However, the only island with a known viable population is Crete. 

In Greece, the species is found in a variety of habitats from sea level up to 2000 meters. It occurs mainly on low elevation areas with moderate slopes. 

In terms of habitats, it is principally found in forests (mixed, broadleaf and conifer), shrubs, pastures and grasslands, agricultural land and in mainland and coastal wetlands. It is also found near water sources but away from human settlements. The population trend has not been quantified but is believed to be stable. The wildcat is a protected species by Greek legislation, while in the Red Book of Endangered Animals of Greece the species is considered Least Concern (LC).
